Tom wished his face wouldn’t always do this in moments of emotion, he knew how it looked – he’d even heard someone using the term ‘gammon’ recently, which was a new one on him. Partial as he was to a proper bit of pork, he’d rather not be compared to one. Especially by people who were probably vegans. Anyway, he’d promised himself not to lose his cool, because it was imperative that, right now, he sounded convincing. Rational. Someone giving an honest statement, not – what was it? – sticking it to the person in the subordinate gender and class position.

And how bloody ironic was that, if only they knew? So what if she’d had to do Ant’s housekeeping – she was living in this place, wasn’t she? And probably minting it all the time, without a care in the world. Whereas life in the Goring household right now was … no; no need to worry about that. Not anymore. Fifty K, Tom, fifty K. It was just enough, just in time. All right, in an ideal world, he wouldn’t have got his hands on it this way, but then, beggars can’t be choosers and all that crap. And when it came down to it, that’s what he’d been for years now, a bloody beggar, going cap-in-hand to a guy who turned his back when the going got really tough. So: subordinate gender and class position, his arse.

Breathe, Goring. Rein it in. This was important. He had to make them believe him.
